Thank you to Kate Rock Book Tours and the author for providing me with an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Esther Anderson lives a simple life on the isolated Bruny Island where her father is the lighthouse keeper. It is what she has always known, but she has always dreamed of more.
When an exotic stranger is washed ashore near her home, Esther is drawn towards him. Esther and Luca's love affair is short lived as they are ripped apart by forces outside of their control.
Soon after, disaster strikes and Esther and her family are forced to forge a new life off the island. Survival is now her main focus, though Esther wont give up on Luca, regardless of the obstacles in their way.
What I liked about this book
- The 1950s setting - the story incorporates some historical events which happened around this time, including the queens coronation tour of Australia
- Lovegrove does not shy away from the social and domestic issues that were prominent in the 1950s.
- This is a quick read and the writing style is coherent and easy to follow.
- Esther is the centre focus for the most part, though there are a few occasions where the perspective shifts to Luca. This helps the reader to gather a clearer picture of their relationship.
- The romance takes off a bit quickly for my tastes. However, it is understandable in this setting due to the time period. Especially taking into consideration Esther's secluded life prior to meeting Luca.
