Thank you to Kate Rock Book Tours and the author for providing me with an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Evie Austin, native of Hatteras Island, North Carolina, and baddest girl on the planet, has not lived her life in a straight line. There have been several detours--career snafus, bad romantic choices, a loved but unplanned child--not to mention her ill-advised lifelong obsession with boxer Mike Tyson. Evie is not plucky, but when life's changes smash over her like the rough surf of the local shoreline, she muddles through--until that moment of loss and longing when muddling will no longer suffice. This is the story of what the baddest girl on the planet must find in herself when a bag of pastries, a new lover, or quick trip to Vegas won't fix anything, and when something more than casual haplessness is required. The Baddest Girl on the Planet is inventive, sharp, witty, and poignant. Readers will want to jump in and advise this baddest girl on the planet--or at least just give her a shake or a hug--at every fascinating turn.

What I liked about this book

  • I found Evie to be very relatable - a lot of the things that happened in her life resonated with me. I could easily see myself in her shoes.
  • Over the course of the book Evie grows as a person and learns from past mistakes.
  • I liked the informality of the writing style. Its almost conversational.
  • The Baddest Girl on the Planet reflects on many tough subjects such as divorce, post natal depression, the trials and tribulations of high school and grief.

What I didn't like
  • The story does not follow a linear timeline but rather jumps back and forth through poignant moments in Evie's life. At some points I found this disorientating.
  • There are occasional switches between 1st person and 3rd person narrative.
The Baddest Girl on the Planet is a thoroughly entertaining story which I think many people will be able to relate to.

Thank you NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Shortly after discovering that she is the one the Moonsday promise speaks of, Ivy Lovely is sent away from school to the hidden town of Belzebuthe.

Ivy is sent on a mission to discover the second portion of the Kindred Stone while trying to stop the Dark Queen from obtaining it herself. But even though she is supposed to be safe within the boundary of the town Ivy is shadowed by something. She will need all of the magic she has and more to find the rest of the Kindred Stone and return to school before time runs out.

What I liked about this book

  • I liked the introduction of new characters, who each brought a new element to the story.
  • The description of Belzebuthe was complex and with each new part of the town that was described I was eager to read more.
  • The unique creatures which (even when the name was an animal that I have heard of) had their own abilities which made them magical.
  • Ivy discovers new aspects of magic in this book which brings new situations to the story.
The Girl with the Whispering Shadow is the second book in The Crowns of Croswald series. I love this series and can't wait to read the next book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter books.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Since they were children, Allie Ellis and her siblings have dreamed of a road trip adventure together. Just when their dream is about to become a reality, their plans look as though they will fall through when some of the siblings can no longer make it.

Allie's childhood crush Detective Steve Collins finds himself joining the road trip and saving the day. They are soon ready to hit the road on the trip of a lifetime.

But little does she know, Allie has become the object of a dangerous stalkers obsession and he has plans of his own.

Will this trip be a second chance for Allie and Collins? Or will their trip take a fatal detour.

What I liked about this book
  • The characters are likeable and relatable. I especially enjoyed the development of Allie's relationship with her siblings over the course of their trip.
  • J.L. Crosswhite provides clear and vivid depictions of the places that the group visit.
  • When I thought the story had come to an end I was surprised by a twist I didn't see coming.
  • The romance between Allie and Collins is sweet.

What I didn't like
  • This is the first book in the In the Shadow series but some of the main characters originally appear in the Hometown Heroes series. The previous books are heavily referenced throughout Off the Map.  As I haven't read this series I felt as though I had missed something.
Off the Map is a gripping suspense romance. This does work as a standalone but I think that the reader would have a better experience if they have read the previous series.
